Happy Halloween from Bright STAR Physical Therapy

Halloween is in full swing at Bright STAR Physical Therapy — check out the cute little pumpkins that showed up in our office today.

National Kidney Awareness Month

We pay attention to all of the ways you can and should keep your body healthy. In our busy lives it is hard to remember everything all the time, but it’s worth it to take a moment and stop and think about the little things we do to nurture our bodies. Eating the right foods. Wearing sunscreen. Getting enough rest. Drinking water.

And there are things we should avoid, too, of course. Like drinking too much – anytime, but particularly on holidays known for excessive consumption of alcohol. With St. Patrick’s Day coming up, on a weekend day, no less, we urge you to stay safe and make sure you have a designated driver if you are out living it up. We participated in a Twitter chat yesterday in which the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shared statistics and warnings about “buzzed driving.”

@NHTSAgov what is the distinction between buzzed and drunk?

@brightstarpt There is no distinction: IS Drunk Driving.

Don’t rely on the luck of the Irish to get you home safely.

Happy Camper

As anyone who has been through successful physical therapy knows, your therapist can feel like a life-saver. We are so thrilled when we can help change a person’s life by guiding them through the process of becoming more mobile or pain-free. As Elliot shares in a testimonial, this can happen at any age.

I can now do things with my body that I have never been able to do.

“I started physical therapy at Bright STAR after a back operation and at the suggestion of my neurologist.  My first experience was very through, efficient, and a professional examination.  My balance was not good.  My legs were not strong.  I also experienced back spasms.  My body was weak and I got tired easily.  I could not walk a straight line.  I experienced genuine caring from the owner and all other staff.  I felt welcomed and at ease.  I was encouraged to start stretching and strengthening exercises.  The physical therapist showed me how to do each one.  At 78 years of age it is a strange experience starting an exercise program.  The results have been amazing.  I am no longer all down, my gait is better, my body much stronger, and my posture as now I stand up straighter.  As my trunk is strengthened I feel stronger and more confident.  Each therapy session was created to assist me in my exercise program and I got individual attention for the entire session.  I can now do things with my body that I have never been able to do.  I no longer experience PAIN and I sleep very soundly.  I wholeheartedly recommend Bright STAR to anyone who wants to improve the quality of their life no matter what their age is.”

A Glimpse Into the World of Pediatric Physical Therapy

pedatric_physical_therapy_caseyThe adorable little boy in the video above is Casey.  Casey has been making amazing progress with the physical therapists at Bright STAR Physical Therapy.  He is a sweet 2-year-old who is a pleasure to work with! Exercises like the one seen in his video have helped his walking improve greatly.  The obstacle course and crawling are a few of his favorite exercises.  All of us at Bright STAR are so proud of Casey and always enjoy seeing his smiling face!

Aquatic Therapy With Bright STAR in North Hollywood

DSCN1731

Aquatic therapy is a specialized branch of physical therapy in which individuals participate in rehabilitative activities while in the water. Water provides buoyancy, resistance in all planes, and a soothing environment. As a result, improvements are often noted in circulation, strength and endurance, balance and coordination, range of motion, and muscle tone.

Our North Hollywood aquatic physical therapy facility is located within minutes of our North Hollywood office. This location offers therapy that is geared toward adults and older children. Patients from any of our locations can use the aquatic therapy pool if this treatment is considered necessary by the therapist. We keep our pool well-maintained and sanitary, with clear guidelines for use by all patients.

Cancer Sucks, But Matt Kemp Lit Up This Kid’s Life

Today’s scheduled post included some great photos of our North Hollywood aquatic therapy facility, but this video that the world has seen finally made it to the BSPT Social Media Desk (which is a virtual place, don’t try to visit it in person). We had to share it with our readers.

This is the now-famous video of Dodgers player Matt Kemp giving pieces of his uniform to a young man who has terminal cancer, and watched a recent game from his wheelchair on the third base line. Warning: you might need a tissue.

Scoliosis Treatment Before-and-After Photo

A remarkable success story…

Last month, the mother of a 14-year old boy we have been treating sent his latest X-ray. After four months of treatment at Bright STAR, the boy’s thoracic curve was reduced by 3 degrees – he is a rapidly growing boy!

His lumbar curve is stable, and the boy will not need a brace but will continue with exercises and physical therapy.

Here are the before-and-after X-rays:
